And believe me, there are password managers out there that are like that. You'd have a leg to stand on if Agilebits actually DID lock you in, and made it difficult/impossible to export your data. Yeah, I guess it's a bit different because I can keep using the version I already have, but it will become obsolete, lack features that I want (for example, I can't get a browser extension for Edge because I'm using 1Password 4 on Windows), or it will develop a bunch of security holes/functionality bugs that will never get fixed.Įxact same situation, IMO. Just the same as if the standalone version becomes much more expensive for the next version.

This is a free market, there's lot of great choices out there. If 1Password no longer becomes worth the cost of entry, I move to another product. It's how I keep my 1Password database in sync with my Keepass2 database since there's no 1Password app for Linux. Not that AgileBits will do this, but that's how you successfully execute lock-in. At what incremental cost will you finally decided that the huge hassle of switching password platforms is worth the extra buck a month? Probably never. The more likely scenario is that in 2019, the price is $4. But if they don't, you're kind of trapped. Hopefully they'll continue to produce great and reliable software.

In the past, they had to earn my upgrade money. Nobody is against subscriptions because they don't want companies to have a "viable and ongoing revenue stream." They're against being held hostage. Maybe Dave Teare succumbs to his meth habit.
Then what are you going to do? Maybe they get bought out. Hopefully they'll always, "do the right thing." The fact that they even offer standalone version is a good sign.īut at some point, they could simply decided that 1Password is worth much more than $3 per month. AgileBits, move to subscription aside, seems like a great company.
